6 2010 Bass Dissfunction Red Lion Witney
Going to a night at a club that has apparently shut down is on the face of it a bad idea, but the chance that Lisa Lashes might be playing just down the road in Witney was too good an opportunity to be missed. Eventually we found the street where the club was supposed to be on so walked up and down a few times, no sign of it. However, there was one bar that seemed quite lively so went up to take a look and there in the window is a poster for 'Dirty Audio', the night that Lisa was supposed to be playing. It looks like the club had shut down and reopened under s different name and is still playing the same night ... but as I read on there is no mention of Lisa Lashes at all ... despite what it says on the website. Well, who can blame her for cancelling a night at a club that doesn't exist. Anyway, went to grab some food first so after a distinctly mediocre curry we headed back towards the club. On route we passed what looked like a garage door pumping out some huge bass and when listening harder it can be heard that its hardcore trance ... A quick look around reveals that the garage door is right next to a pub called 'The Red Lion' so we ventured inside. The music got a little louder inside and following the sound we rounded a corner and there was a little back room with a bunch of ravers enjoying some pretty hard music. The music was good so we stuck around, it looked like there were a lot of regulars at this night, then after a while I realised that this is a night that I've seen on don't stay in a few times. It's a good night with some enthusastic locals enjoying some good, hard tunes. Unfortunately as its only a pub it finished at 1pm but was good while it lasted. Thats no problem though because we can just head to the club. So, on to the club and the music sounded quite trancy, the guy on the door said it was open til 3 so we went for it. Then walking in we were immediately dissapointed by the fact that it was very empty, no-one on the dance floor ... and just to add to it the music turned to drum n bass pretty much straight away. Not that thats too bad, but the trance was good. The dance floor did get a bit busier with the drum and bass ... nearly 5 people on the dance floor, lol. The only highlight of this club was one of the dj's did some good scratchin ... but that was it before the close at 2 ... yes, 2, stupid bouncer on the door lied to get us in didn't he. Overall Witney was impressive for an Oxfordshire market town, lively and the hardcore trance had a good following, so much better than Bicester where I live now. So this red lion night is a quirky, fun night thats worth going to if your in the area ... but steer clear of the club and 'dirty audio', big disappoinment there.
